The only child of Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Sr., a transit police officer and jazz pianist, and Cora Lillian, a department store price checker, Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. was born in Harlem, New York City.

He was relocated to the Dyckman Street projects in the Inwood section of Upper Manhattan when he was 3 years old, where he grew up.

Alcindor was 22+12 inches (57 cm) long and weighed 12 lb 11 oz (5.75 kg) at birth. For his age, he was always incredibly tall. He was already 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) tall at the age of nine. Alcindor experienced a lot of depression as a teen as a result of the comments and looks regarding his height.

In high school, Alcindor started his record-breaking basketball career by leading the Power Memorial Academy team under coach Jack Donohue to three consecutive New York City Catholic championships, a 71-game winning streak, and a 79-2 overall record. He gained the moniker “The Tower from Power” as a result. His 2,067 total points set a high school record in New York City.

When Alcindor was in the 10th and 11th grades, the team won the national high school boys basketball title, and they finished second his senior year. After Donohue called him a “nigger” in his final season, their friendship became tense.
