A retired Ventura Police Department sergeant known as John Snowling opened fire at a famous motorcycle pub in Trabuco Canyon on Wednesday night, leaving three dead and six more injured.

John Snowling, 59, a longtime married man going through a divorce, has been confirmed as the shooter.

One of the six people shot by gunfire at Cook’s Corner tavern on Wednesday night while dining with another person was Snowling’s divorced wife; three other people are dead.

In a brief interview in the station lobby, Cmdr. Sarah Heard stated that his former coworkers at the Ventura Police Department, where he worked for over 28 years, were astonished to learn that Snowling was responsible for a mass killing.

Heard noted that after joining the force in 1986, his time as a police officer was mainly uneventful, with stops in the traffic division and as a liaison officer for the homeless.

Early in his career, Pat Miller, who would eventually become the police chief in Ventura, was his patrol partner.

Snowling was a member of a patrol squad that handled security at Pacific View Mall in the early 2000s.

In an interview at the time, Snowling stated, “This isn’t Los Angeles, where we have gunshots and stabbings. It’s a rather secure mall.

Under normal conditions, Snowling retired in 2014 as a sergeant, according to Heard.
