Fechner's law

Fechner's law, also known as the Weber-Fechner law, is a fundamental principle in psychophysics that describes the relationship between the physical intensity of a stimulus and the perceived intensity of that stimulus. It states that the perceived intensity of a stimulus is proportional to the logarithm of the physical intensity of the stimulus.

Fechner's law has important implications for sensory discrimination, which is the ability to detect differences between stimuli. According to Fechner's law, the just noticeable difference (JND) between two stimuli is a constant proportion of the original stimulus intensity. This means that the JND will be larger for more intense stimuli and smaller for less intense stimuli.

• Signal detection theory

Fechner's law has also been used to develop models of signal detection theory, which is a mathematical framework for understanding how individuals make decisions in the presence of noise.
