Type of rig

The Byford Dolphin was a semi-submersible drilling rig, which means that it was a mobile offshore drilling unit that was designed to operate in deep water. Semi-submersible drilling rigs are typically used in water depths of 100 to 3,000 feet. They are held in place by a system of anchors and can be moved from one location to another as needed.

Stability: Semi-submersible drilling rigs are designed to be very stable, even in rough seas. This is because they have a large, submerged hull that provides buoyancy and stability. The Byford Dolphin was able to withstand the force of the explosion and fire, and it remained afloat after the accident.
Mobility: Semi-submersible drilling rigs are also very mobile, which allows them to be moved from one location to another as needed. This is important for exploration drilling, as it allows the rig to be moved to new locations to search for oil and gas.
Safety: Semi-submersible drilling rigs are generally considered to be very safe, as they are designed to withstand a variety of hazards, including explosions and fires. The Byford Dolphin accident was a rare occurrence, and it led to a number of changes in the way that semi-submersible drilling rigs are operated.
