Russ Francis Bio And Career

On September 26, 1976, the Patriots defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, the two-time defending champions, 30–27. On fourth down one, Francis grabbed a 38-yard touchdown pass from Steve Grogan. Francis caught 139 yards, a career-high, in that same game. What happened was that Howard Cosell labelled him the “All-World Tight End.”

On a wide receiver reverse option play in 1980, Francis hauled in a 23-yard ball from Harold Jackson as the Patriots defeated the New York Jets 34–21 on November 2.

On the same wide receiver reverse option play, WR Harold Jackson threw a 12-yard pass to him during the Pats’ 16–13 overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football, December 8.

On September 24, 1978, in the Oakland Coliseum, Francis recorded a career-long 53-yard reception and 126 yards of receiving in the Patriots’ 21-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders. He had 39 receptions for 543 yards that season, which led the Patriots in receptions.

Francis was selected to the Pro Bowl three times in a row (1977–1979). After the 1980 season, Francis gave up playing football professionally.

Francis has stated that two factors played a major role in this decision: first, the Patriots denied him his guaranteed bonus for making the Pro Bowl (due to his motorcycle accident injury), which prevented him from playing; and second, the Patriots attempted to revoke Darryl Stingley’s medical insurance after a Jack Tatum hit rendered him paralyzed in August 1978.

Francis was Stingley’s first teammate to arrive following the hit, and he has stated that it was difficult to play after that. Francis was dealt for a draft pick that the Patriots used to select future Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett, to the San Francisco 49ers, the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Francis was hired by ABC Sports following his departure from the Patriots. Francis had an interview with 49ers head coach Bill Walsh while he was in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.

Walsh informed him that he should not miss this opportunity to play football since it was the only time in his life that he would be able to do so and that he would never get these years back.

After missing the 1981 season, Francis announced his retirement, signed with the 49ers, and helped the team win a Super Bowl ring in 1984. Francis (5 catches for 60 yards) was a major factor in San Francisco’s victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX. Francis recorded a career-high 44 receptions in 1985.
