Mike Shannon biography

The second oldest of his six siblings, Shannon was born on July 15, 1939, and was raised at 7045 Winona Avenue in south St. Louis. His parents were Thomas A. Shannon and Elizabeth W. Richason.

After earning his legal degree, Shannon’s father, a St. Louis police officer, served in the prosecutor’s office until taking the position of City Prosecuting Attorney for St. Louis in the early 1970s.

Shannon graduated from Christian Brothers College High School in 1957 after attending Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic School for elementary school.

He was the only athlete to earn both trophies in the same year in both football and basketball for Missouri High School his senior year.

Prior to departing in 1958 to start his professional baseball career after signing with Bing Devine, general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, Shannon attended the University of Missouri and competed for the Missouri Tigers in collegiate baseball.

Shannon, who thought he was a superior football player, has stated that he probably would have stayed in Missouri and pursued a professional football career if football players were paid more in his generation.

Shannon might have won the Heisman Trophy if he had continued his education, according to his old coach Frank Broyles.
