a gospel and rhythm and blues performer, actress, and civil rights advocate from the United States. As a member of her family’s band, The Staple Singers, she achieved renown (she is the last surviving member of that band).

She cut the smash songs “I’ll Take You There” and “Let’s Do It Again” while she was a member of the group.  Staples recorded her debut solo album under her own name in 1969.

Mavis Staples’s parents: Meet Pops Staples, Oceola Staples

On July 10, 1939, Mavis Staples was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents were Roebuck “Pops” Staples and Oceola Staples, the youngest of four children.

Before Staples was born in 1939, Pops, a well-known musician in his own right, relocated to Chicago and took a job in a meatpacking plant.

Pops carried on playing music and joined the quartet’s Trumpet Jubilees band to continue. He left the band and started a new one with his immediate family after growing weary of the group’s lack of passion.

Oceola Staples, 69, the lone non-stage performer among the gospel and pop group Staples Singers, passed away in her Dolton home.
Roebuck, Mrs. Staples’ husband of 53 years, who founded the group, stated that she “was a Staples Singer, but she didn’t sing.” She served as our inspiration and pillar of support.

Mrs. Staples, who was born in Louisville, Miss., met her husband in Drew, Miss., where she was attending school. They went to Chicago two years after getting married, in 1933. Family and friends affectionately referred to Mrs. Staples and her husband as “Mom” and “Pop.”
