Mesut Ozil biography

Born and raised in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Ozil started his senior club career with Schalke 04 before turning 19 and signing with Werder Bremen in 2008.

His individual achievements resulted in a move to Real Madrid in 2010 after he won the DFB-Pokal in his first season. He played for that team for three seasons, leading the league in assists each time, and helping the team capture the La Liga championship.

When he joined Arsenal in a deal that could have cost up to £42.5 million (€50 million), Mesut Ozil set a club record for association football transfers at the time, making him the most costly German player in history.

In England, he recorded the second-highest number of assists in a Premier League season, helped Arsenal break a nine-year trophy drought, and won three FA Cups. After joining Fenerbahçe on a free transfer in 2021, Zil signed with Istanbul Başakşehir in 2022 when his deal with the team expired.

Ozil received the most German Player of the Year honours. At the age of 20, he made his senior début for the German national team in 2009 and participated in five important competitions. He led the assist charts at the UEFA Euro 2012 and the FIFA World Cup 2010, helping Germany twice to the semifinals.
