Marcio Freire, a veteran Brazilian surfer, is 47 years old. Freire was one of three Brazilian surfers who earned the moniker “Mad Dogs” after conquering Hawaii’s fearsome “Jaws” wave. Freire appears alongside Danilo Couto and Yuri Soledade in the 2016 documentary Mad Dogs.

On Thursday, January 6, he died while surfing the local massive waves at the renowned Portuguese surf site. Around 4:16 p.m., the water accident was declared.

The Brazilian large wave surfing pioneer “was pulled to the beach by a partner [Lucas Chumbo] on a jet ski, already in cardio-respiratory arrest,” according to the captain of the Port of Nazaré in the Leiria province.
