American rapper, singer, and entrepreneur Kevin Jerome Gilyard, best known by his stage name Kevin Gates, was born on February 5, 1986. He has a contract with Bread Winners’ Association through a collaboration with Atlantic Records. Islah, his first studio album, debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart in January 2016. Gates has put out a number of mixtapes before Islah, including Stranger Than Fiction, By Any Means, and Luca Brasi 2, all of which reached their peak positions in the top 40 of the Billboard 200 chart.

Gates launched his career in 2007 when he signed with the local label Dead Game Records. In the mid-2000s, his career grew alongside that of fellow Baton Rouge natives Boosie Badazz and Webbie. In 2007, the three worked together on Gates’ first mixtape, Pick of Da Litter. Another mixtape, All or Nuthin’, was published in 2008 and had “a lot of pain…a lot of actual stories,” according to Gates.

Both Gates and Boosie were imprisoned in separate cases in 2008, thus putting Gates’ music career on hold. [14] Between 2008 and 2011, he was imprisoned for 31 months. During this time, Gates claimed to have gotten a master’s degree in psychology while incarcerated. For good behavior, he was released from prison early.
