Two of the founding voices of rock ‘n’ roll were Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. Even though they did so in various ways, they all captured the spirit of the genre. Johnny Cash had a strong religious upbringing and based his music on gospel, but he also embodied a more sinister, anti-establishment mindset.

He frequently projected an image of an outlaw, most notably through his song “Folsom Prison Blues,” which he performed for the prisoners of the prison in 1968. Presley broke through the conventional mold of the 1950s with both his music, which was highly influenced by black artists and seen as noisy and rebellious, and his hip gyrations, which were seen as being too sexual.

Around the mid-1950s, both Cash and Presley began performing in Tennessee, where they shared musical influences and friends. The fact that their paths intersected multiple times is not at all surprising. They occasionally attended the same shows together and occasionally watched each other perform during the decade.

Even after fame and fate parted ways, they formed a bond of mutual appreciation that would last a lifetime. The ties between the King and the Man in Black are further explained here.
