Leslie Gold, also known as “Les,” has made a name for himself as a reality TV star, pawnbroker, author, and media personality. Les comes from a family of pawnbrokers that spans three generations, beginning with his grandfather’s pawnshop on Michigan Avenue in Detroit. He made his first sale at the age of seven in that very shop. Today, his business, American Jewelry, and Loan has five locations, employs up to 200 people, and serves around 1,000 customers per day.

Gold’s entrepreneurial drive started early in life, selling pizza slices to classmates at Hebrew School when he was only 12. His passion for business led him to open American Jewelry and Loan at the age of 28 in 1978, originally located at the Green Eight Shopping Center in Oak Park, Michigan. Later, he moved the shop to its current location on Greenfield Road in Detroit, occupying a 50,000-square-foot building that was once a bowling alley.

Aside from his business ventures, Gold is known for his philanthropic endeavors. He is an avid supporter of The Heat And Warmth Fund (“THAW Fund”), which assists families with paying their heating and electricity bills. In 2013, he hosted a fundraising party at his store called “Hardcore THAW” that raised over $40,000 for the organization. His charitable spirit and dedication to his community have garnered respect and admiration from both colleagues and the public.
