Hank Green Biography

William Henry Green II, widely known as Hank Green, has been a prominent figure in the fields of science communication, environmental activism, and digital media. Born on May 5, 1980, in Birmingham, Alabama, Hank’s passion for knowledge and technology has propelled him to become a respected educator and advocate for environmental sustainability.

Hank’s journey began in Orlando, Florida, where his family relocated shortly after his birth. As a young student at Winter Park High School, he exhibited a natural talent for web development, creating websites for both personal projects and local clients. His early projects, such as the “Mars Exploration Page,” gained recognition following the success of the Mars Pathfinder Mission in 1994. Hank’s ability to capture attention through his websites would later become a recurring theme in his career.

After graduating high school in 1998, Hank pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from Eckerd College in 2002. His thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Montana, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in environmental studies. It was during his time in Montana that Hank’s passion for the environment and technology converged, culminating in his master’s thesis titled “Of Both Worlds: How the Personal Computer and the Environmental Movement Change Everything.” This work showcased Hank’s forward-thinking mindset and his recognition of the potential of technology to drive positive change.

During his academic journey, Hank embarked on various ventures that would shape his future endeavours. One notable project was the creation of “EcoGeek,” initially conceived as a class project but eventually evolving into a prominent environmental publication. EcoGeek attracted widespread attention, earning accolades from Time magazine, which described it as “porn for hardcore science, tech, and enviro freaks.” Hank’s writing on environmental issues garnered recognition from esteemed publications such as The New York Times, National Geographic, and Scientific American.

In addition to his environmental advocacy, Hank’s talent for engaging and educating audiences led him to collaborate with Mental Floss, a popular platform known for its intriguing trivia. He co-authored the book “Mental Floss: Scatterbrained” and contributed regularly to the publication. Hank’s passion for communication and education took another form when, alongside his brother John, he embarked on a groundbreaking video blog project called Brotherhood 2.0. For an entire year, they communicated solely through video blogs, which were made available to the public on their YouTube channel, Vlogbrothers, and website.

Recognizing the power of online video as an educational tool, Hank launched the science-focused YouTube channel SciShow in January 2012. The channel aimed to make science approachable and dispel the notion that it was a difficult subject. With its diverse content, including interviews with experts, trivia shows, and explanations of scientific fields like chemistry, physics, and biology, SciShow quickly gained popularity and became a valuable supplementary resource for education.

Hank’s dedication to education and entertainment didn’t stop there. In June 2015, he and John started the podcast “Dear Hank & John,” which they humorously refer to as “A comedy podcast about death.” This conversational podcast allowed them to engage with their audience on a more personal level, reminiscent of their earlier Vlogbrothers videos.

Embracing new platforms and adapting to the changing digital landscape, Hank joined TikTok in September 2019. His content, spanning educational, humorous, and social-commentary videos, resonated with millions of viewers. Hank’s impact on TikTok was undeniable, with over 7 million followers and more than 497 million likes on his page as of October 2022. His viral video discussing his book, “An Absolutely Remarkable Thing,” led to a staggering 3200% increase in sales on Amazon, showcasing his influence and ability to connect with audiences.

Hank’s dedication to environmental causes extends beyond digital platforms. In April 2021, he announced his decision to donate his TikTok Creator Fund revenue, totalling over $35,000, to the First Nations Development Institute, exemplifying his commitment to philanthropy and making a positive impact in the world.

However, life sometimes presents unexpected challenges, as it did when, on May 19, 2023, Hank shared that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Despite this difficult news, it is evident from Hank’s past endeavours that his strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit will guide him through this journey. The outpouring of support from his dedicated community and the positive impact he has made on countless lives is a testament to the enduring influence of his work.
