Tips for Promoting Gender Equity in Education by Glenn Sandler and Betty Sandler

Glenn Sandler and Betty Sandler, pioneers in the field of gender equity in education, offer the following tips for creating a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students:

Tip 1: Examine your own biases and assumptions.

We all have biases and assumptions, but it is important to be aware of them and to challenge them. Ask yourself: Do I treat students differently based on their gender? Do I have different expectations for boys and girls? By being aware of our own biases, we can take steps to mitigate their impact on our teaching.

Tip 2: Use inclusive language.

The language we use can have a powerful impact on students. Avoid using gendered language, such as "boys and girls" or "ladies and gentlemen." Instead, use inclusive language, such as "students" or "everyone." This will help to create a more welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Tip 3: Provide opportunities for all students to participate.

Make sure that all students have an opportunity to participate in class discussions, group projects, and other activities. Don't let a few students dominate the conversation. Encourage shy or reluctant students to participate. This will help to create a more equitable learning environment and give all students a chance to learn.

Tip 4: Challenge gender stereotypes.

Gender stereotypes can limit students' potential. Challenge gender stereotypes in your teaching and encourage students to think critically about them. For example, don't assume that all boys are good at math and all girls are good at reading. Instead, encourage all students to pursue their interests and talents, regardless of their gender.

Tip 5: Create a safe and supportive learning environment.

All students need to feel safe and supported in order to learn. Create a classroom environment where all students feel respected and valued. This means creating a space where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and take risks without fear of being ridiculed or punished.
