What happened to Gianni Infantino?

Gianni Infantino was re-elected as FIFA president unopposed during the organization’s assembly on Thursday, March 16, 2021.

The 211 member federations’ delegates ushered in the 52-year-old Swiss attorney who replaced the disgraced Sepp Blatter in 2016 for a third term by acclamation, just as they did four years prior.

“I love you all,” Infantino told delegates in the Rwandan capital, where the voting system did not register the number of dissident voices.

Infantino declared in December that his first three years as president did not count as a full term, despite FIFA laws limiting a president to a maximum of three four-year terms. This has already set the stage for Infantino to remain until 2031.

While the women’s World Cup will feature 32 teams for the first time in Australia and New Zealand later this year, the men’s World Cup will grow from 32 teams to 48 for the next iteration in North America in 2026.
