On Monday, October 2, 2023, the Nobel Prize for Medicine for the year 2023 was conferred upon Drew Weissman and his Hungarian counterpart, Katalin Kariko.

The two scientists first crossed paths while queuing for a photocopier, and their subsequent research on the mRNA molecule culminated in the development of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute Medical University, a highly esteemed body in the scientific community, selected Weissman and Kariko for this coveted award, which includes a cash prize of 11 million Swedish crowns to be shared between the two laureates.

Who Is Drew Weissman?

Dr. Drew Weissman, an esteemed American physician-scientist, has gained widespread recognition for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of RNA biology, ultimately earning him the prestigious Nobel Prize. Notably, his pioneering research has played a pivotal role in the development of mRNA vaccines, particularly the highly acclaimed COVID-19 vaccines produced by BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna.

Born into a Jewish family on September 7, 1959, in Lexington, Massachusetts, Dr. Weissman’s early upbringing fostered his passion for scientific inquiry. While information regarding his parents remains undisclosed, his academic journey commenced at Brandeis University, where he diligently pursued his studies. In 1981, he successfully obtained both his B.A. and M.A. degrees, specializing in enzymology and biochemistry. During his time at the university, he also had the privilege of working in the esteemed laboratory of Gerald Fasman, further honing his research skills and expanding his scientific repertoire.

In 1987, Weissman successfully completed his graduate education in microbiology and immunology at Boston University, earning both an M.D. and Ph.D. Subsequently, he undertook a residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, followed by a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he was under the supervision of Anthony Fauci, the then-director of infectious diseases at the NIH.

Weissman founded his laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 to conduct research on RNA and the biology of the innate immune system. As an immunologist at the university, he gained expertise in investigating vaccinations.

It was during this time that he met Katalin Karikó, his colleague and collaborator, with whom he shared concerns about the limited funding available for RNA research. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Weissman made the strategic decision to partner with researchers at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand to develop and distribute COVID-19 vaccines to the nation and neighbouring low-income countries that may not have immediate access to the vaccine.

Weissman is acknowledged as the innovator responsible for several patents that detail the essential alterations to RNA to make it suitable for vaccines and other therapeutic uses. Th

ese patents were later licensed to Gary Dahl, the respected founder and CEO of Cellscript, who then granted licenses to Moderna and BioNTech for their COVID-19 vaccines. Both Weissman and his research partner, Katalin Karikó, have received multiple honors, including the prestigious Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Study Award.
